How old are you? Just out of highschool, or have you finished college already?
If you havn't gone to school yet, don't do it. If you're short on money, go to community college first two years then transfer to state school. If you grab instate you're looking at $1200 max a semester for FT. This is still a chunk of change, about 10 grand worth, but can easily be paid off with a weekend/pt job such as bartending where you'll be able to also start social networking for future employment.

Almost everyone I know that joined the army after high school because they didn't want to go to college came back four years later and back to square one.
They usually don't teach you shit. One of my friends went and they told him they would train him to be some sort of military cop. Another wanted to be some sort of helicopter jumper/water rescuer.
They are both back and lumping wood for a framer for 11/hr.
They wasted 4 of the best years of their life (18-22) on bullshit.

Don't believe a word your recruiter says. His job is to get you to sign that contract. The Army is currently very low on recruits which means recruiters have a lot of pressure on them as always to recruit. Sure they could give yoy a $20,000 sign on Bonus and Completely pay for your schooling IF you make it back from Iraq everything might pan out. Second day of Basic Training you will find out that everything your recruiter told you is a lie and theres nothing you can do about it. Think about it this way the Army will pay you under $1500 and usually less if you don't have a college education and you work 18 hour days...NO TYPO...18 HOURS A DAY which leaves you with about 6 hours of sleep. Don't think your not going to go to Iraq for 15 months as 99% of everyone goes and these days its mostly civilians that work on base. As was said above the Army not only makes you dumber, but it is also a waste of life. You would be better off finding two 8 hour a day jobs and working 16 hours a day to pay off your loan. Read stories all over the internet of sergeants and lots of people going AWOL and the people that join the Army are uneducated losers that have nothing better to do with their life. Some of the comments above need to be taken with a grain of salt.....that said, I have nephew who joined the Army. He was all gung ho on serving his country and helping out any way he can. Trust me, war will change you and you will be in Iraq. He was in Iraq within two months of completion of basic training. His convoy hit an IED and he was hospitalized for 2 weeks and may receive a purple heart, but is now back on the front line. If you are prepared to die for our country and think you can handle it mentally, then good luck, but if you have serious doubts, you should really think it through. Hope this helps. i just got discharged back in march... joined in 1999... had a double MOS and went to Airborne school. The army is good if you are a trouble maker and need to get things straightened up in your life... If you have another direction in life, I would take that over the Army...
every promise every recruiter makes is a lie - they know its a lie, but they dont care because the moment you take the SECOND oath (you take 2), then your are obligated under contract to the US Government... they say jump, you say how high... pretty simple

Met a guy at the casino last weekend who's full retirement date was that day. He is now a drilll sargent at a local military school. Mentioned he did not have many options for other work.
Did 3 tours in Iraq and lost 4 of his buds. The thing that got me was out of 14 married guys he served with came back and 10 of the bitches found other guys. Only 4 still married.

Only do it if you have prior schooling in a certain field and can do something related to that in the Army. I have a little brother (Army) and little sister (Air Force) in the armed forces. My brother got the assignment he wanted because of school (flying unmanned vehicles-like drones and shit) but the Army still fucked him. First, his papers originally said he'd be stationed in Hawaii, then he was supposed to go somewhere else, but one day they told him and a few others that they'd be stationed in Buttfuck Nowhere, Alaska for the rest of their four years. My brother didn't mind this because the unmanned shit was supposed to be there. He goes to Alaska and none of the equipment is there and won't be there for another 12-18 months. So he has said fuck it and is doing shit to join Special Forces right now. Army has basically taught him dick except to be an absolute physical beast.
My sister on the other hand got exactly what she wanted from the Air Force with no schooling and got a nice signing bonus (around $6,000 if I remember right). What she is doing is also big time helping her for the field she is going to be in after her 4-5 years and she is having a really great time.
So I'd say unless you could do school first and then pick your position, do something else besides the Army.
